Musée du Louvre, Paris
From 22 January to 12 May 2025
Category: Art, Culture
The exhibition ‘Revoir Cimabue’ at the Musée du Louvre presents some forty emblematic works by the Italian master, highlighting his fundamental role in the birth of Italian and Western painting. Through masterpieces such as La Maestà, often considered to be the birth certificate of Western painting, the exhibition explores the introduction of naturalism into art, a major innovation by Cimabue. The event also marks the restoration of La Maestà, as well as the recent acquisition in 2023 of The Derision of Christ, offering a fresh perspective on the legacy of this artist who shaped the history of art. The exhibition allows visitors to rediscover Cimabue's impact on subsequent generations, notably his pupils Giotto and Duccio. It also highlights the importance of conserving works of art to preserve this wealth of history for future generations.
